In an expected move, West Virginia forward Jamel King has entered the transfer portal. The move was first reported by on3.com.
King played sparingly for WVU's men's basketball team this past season, appearing in eight games while scoring a total of 12 points in mostly mop-up time. He had five rebounds and two assists in 30 minutes of action in 2022-23. In his first year at WVU (2021-22) he scored three points in 29 minutes of action in eight games, with two rebounds.
A native of Uniontown, Alabama, King was 6-15 from the field over the two seasons, making two of six shots from 3-point range.
King's departure is not likely to be the only one from the Mountaineer roster in the coming offseason. Jimmy Bell, Joe Toussaint and Tre Mitchell have decisions awaiting them as to whether to pursue pro careers or return for a final season of college eligibility, and other underclassmen could also be weighing their options to continue their collegiate careers elsewhere.
Following West Virginia's season-ending loss to Maryland in the NCAA Tournament, both Mitchell and Bell said they had not made decisions yet in that regard.
West Virginia saw three players – Erik Stevenson, Kedrian Johnson and Emmitt Matthews – perform in their last college games this past week. King's departure would make four potential scholarship spots to be filled, however, two of those are expected to be allocated to Jose Perez, whose waiver request to play this year was denied by the NCAA, and freshman Josiah Davis, who saw only limited action this past season.
