PHOTOS: Mooresville ceremony honors those who serve, protect and sacrifice
MOORESVILLE – With the shock still lingering from the April 29 altercation in Charlotte that resulted in the deaths of four law enforcement officers — including two with Mooresville ties – the Exchange Club of Mooresville/Lake Norman and the town held National Police Week ceremonies inside town hall on May 15. The program honored all law enforcement officers, remembered those killed in the line of duty and included a special tribute in the form of chairs adorned with flags to recognize Mooresville police officers – Chief of Police James Rimmer (Dec. 7, 1938), Det. Lt. Larry Barger (July 13, 1974), and K9 Officer Jordan Sheldon (May 4, 2019) – who died while serving the community. A welcome from Exchange Club President Marlo Mikeal and comments from Mayor Chris Carney and MPD Chief Ron Campurciani were part of the program, which included an honor guard presentation, the “National Anthem” sung by Laura Roach, prayers from the Rev. David Giles and Rev. Terry Cherry, the placing of a commemorative wreath, “Amazing Grace” on bagpipes by Mooresville firefighter Jordan Dumform and “Taps” on the bugle by Tristan Sneary. In their comments, Carney referenced the tragedy two weeks earlier as a reminder of the “worst-case scenario” when officers put their lives on the line to protect others. And Campurciani expressed a mix of sadness and pride, saying recent events had put “a big shadow over Mooresville,” but he knew, after mourning and saying goodbye to their colleagues, police officers got up the next morning, put on their uniforms and went back to work. “They don’t want medals or awards, just appreciation for the effort, the sacrifice they make everyday to protect you,” he said. “And they will be there, because they care. Because they are police officers.” -- Photos by Lee Sullivan.
