Spartanburg launches Wall Street Wednesdays to boost downtown traffic
Foot traffic in downtown Spartanburg has slowed significantly since Morgan Square stopped being a major pedestrian gateway close to four decades ago. Several developments under construction near the former city hall block — a municipal government complex, parking deck, and two commercial and residential mixed used buildings — are also affecting pedestrian traffic, according to Christopher George, communications and engagement director with the city. City officials have created Wall Street Wednesdays, a weekly music series featuring local performers, to boost traffic in the area along Wall Street off West Main Street and support local businesses. Unlike Music on Main, which takes place every Thursday from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Morgan Square, Wall Street Wednesdays is designed to be a smaller, more intimate experience. "This effort isn't centered around the music. It's more centered around the street and the space and drawing people down to that space so they can enjoy it and hopefully shop at some of those restaurants as well. Music On Main is a traditional weekly music series," said George. Wall Street Wednesdays will debut on Aug. 5 and run through October. It will occur at two different times during the day, including 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.

Downtown Clemson traffic shifts as College Avenue project closes roads
Drivers in downtown Clemson should prepare for several weeks of traffic changes before the school year starts, as the final phase of the College Avenue improvement project gets underway. College Avenue between Highway 93 and North Clemson Avenue closed on July 20, with intermittent closures on North Clemson Avenue. On July 27, the closure will expand to include the intersection of College Avenue and Highway 93, with North Clemson Avenue fully closed. The final phase of the project includes paving College Avenue, installing raised crosswalks, upgrading water, sewer and stormwater infrastructure, adding fiber conduit and rebuilding curb lines and sidewalks. Crews will work extended hours to complete the improvements. By Aug. 3, the closure will extend to Sloan Street as crews complete paving. All the closures are weather-dependent. The project is expected to be completed before the start of the Clemson University fall semester, with classes beginning Aug. 19.
