Ministry's lawsuit against city of Bryan continued until June
A federal lawsuit filed by a church in downtown Bryan to prevent the city from fining it $1,000 a day for operating a 24-hour-a-day ministry has been continued until June 18. Representatives of the city of Bryan and the church, Dad’s Place, spent Monday morning in U.S. District Court in Toledo trying to iron out what issues each side wanted Judge Jack Zouhary to address that day and in the future. Judge Zouhary directed the lawyers for both sides to meet with their respective clients and identify what they felt needed to be tackled, plus getting their answers to specific questions posed by the judge, including if overnight stays is at the root of the dispute. “What questions do you want me to address today and down the road?” Judge Zouhary said. “I applaud the church for taking steps to aid the homeless.”

Saturday Essay: Ohio church helping homeless faces religious discrimination
Homelessness is an epidemic in this country. While the causes of this problem are complex and numerous, one thing that is clear is that more and more Americans are finding themselves in dire financial conditions with seemingly nowhere to go, no one to help them. It is in this moment, when people are in most desperate need, Pastor Chris Avell and his church, Dad’s Place, step in to offer a helping hand. Dad’s Place operates a 24-hour church that seeks to care for both the spiritual and physical needs of the hurting and vulnerable in its community. If you are someone who has nowhere to go or no one to love or care for you, Dad’s Place offers you a place to take refuge and invites you to be part of its family. Submit a letter to the editor To Pastor Chris, Dad’s Place is simply living out the Bible’s commands to care for the “least of these,” and in doing so, it has created a community to those who are so often ostracized by our society and shown love to people who have perhaps never experienced it before.
