Eric’s compost and our robotic mowers turned out to be a perfect match.”

Why Zippy Lawnz Signed On

For Zippy Lawnz, backing a local maker fits how the company already works.

It uses only organic fertilization, mows only with electric equipment and treats Organic Lawn Builder as the foundation of its organic program.

Richards says that approach has helped homeowners cut their fertilization needs by up to 25%.

“We draw a hard line against excess chemical use. It’s part of who we are,” Richards said. “Between organic soil building and electric mowing, we’re helping our neighbors keep beautiful lawns while cutting runoff and carbon emissions.”

Cleaner Lawns, Cleaner Streams

That runoff matters for local streams.

A newer option, Organic Lawn Builder Plus, blends organic blood meal fertilizer into the compost, so nutrients arrive held in a layer of organic matter and release steadily instead of washing away.

“Spray-on fertilizer can wash right off into storm drains and streams,” Richards said. “When the feeding is built into the compost, it stays where the grass can use it. We think that’s a better result for your lawn and for our community.”

Value for Homeowners

For homeowners, the organic matter means soil that holds moisture better, deeper roots and denser grass that can crowd out weeds.

It also simplifies the job.

Based on national averages cited by Zippy Lawnz, topdressing a quarter acre with bulk compost takes about 4 tons of material and averages roughly $1,179 delivered and spread.

Organic Lawn Builder covers the same area with one 400-pound bag for $600 delivered and spread, or $300 delivered.

Zippy Lawnz estimates its nitrogen releases over two to three years, which works out to roughly $200 to $300 a year.

The Plus version costs $600 delivered or $900 delivered and spread.

Room to Grow

Richards and Toedter see the partnership as a starting point.

They hope to bring more homeowners into organic soil building while creating new opportunities for locally produced agricultural materials, a model that could grow as more neighbors look for greener ways to care for their yards.

The timing is good for anyone curious.

Late fall is one of the best times to feed a lawn, since grass keeps building roots and storing nutrients for winter.

“People think lawn season is over, but November is when you set up next year,” Richards said. “Get a bag down this month, follow up with a spring feeding, and you’ll see the difference.”

November delivery is still open within 30 miles of Kennett Square, covering most of Chester and Delaware counties along with northern Delaware and nearby parts of Maryland and New Jersey.

To see how Organic Lawn Builder stacks up against synthetic fertilizer and bulk compost, download the Organic Lawn Builder brochure and compare prices for yourself, or call Zippy Lawnz with questions.

Organic Lawn Builder · Made in Kennett Square

What could your lawn grow on better soil?

One 400 lb bag of MYCOguard compost covers about a quarter acre and releases nutrients gradually for two to three years.
