MONROE, N.C. — Two young people could be charged for calling in a bomb threat to the Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport on May 24.

According to the Monroe Police Department, the juveniles will not be named due to their ages.

Police located the two young people in Harnett County after airport officials received a phone call stating there were explosives at the airport.

Officers responded, and the airport was evacuated as multiple law enforcement agencies searched the airport and investigated the threat, including the origin of the phone call. The Federal Aviation Administration paused all air traffic in and out of the airport.

Police are seeking charges against the juveniles through the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.

Multiple agencies responded, including the Monroe Fire Department, the Union County Sheriff’s Office, Union EMS, the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad, the Erwin Police Department, US Customs and Border Protection, the Federal Bureau of Investigations, the Department of Homeland Security and the FAA.

“We cannot overstate the importance of cooperation among all law enforcement agencies to investigate serious incidents like this one. We were able to swiftly and seamlessly bring this situation to a safe and peaceful conclusion thanks to the efforts of our officers and the assistance of these cooperating agencies,” said City of Monroe Police Chief J. Bryan Gilliard.

This investigation is ongoing.
