According to Mobile Fire-Rescue, at approximately 6:35 p.m., Mobile Fire-Rescue Department crews were dispatched to Navco Community Outreach at 1366 Navco Road.
Witnesses reported thick, black smoke coming from the building, stemming from a fire within the business.
All occupants of the community center and all adjacent businesses safely evacuated prior to MFRD’s arrival.
As fire crews arrived on scene, personnel confirmed heavy flames and smoke present at the store front. Fire scene operations were immediately established, as crews located nearby water sources and fought back flames to make entry.
Witnesses and patrons at the scene reported that a rescue dog was still trapped inside of the business, near the rear of structure.
Search and rescue teams focused their search efforts and were able to successfully locate and rescue the dog from the burning building. The pet was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and released to her owner.
Suppression teams battled flames for approximately 35 minutes before gaining control of the blaze. Navco Community Outreach suffered significant fire, smoke, and water damage as a result of the incident. Flames were contained to the single business, while varying amounts of smoke extended to connecting businesses.
There were no injuries to fire personnel nor civilians. Fire investigators continue to review the scene as an accidental fire.
