UPDATE: Firefighters have confirmed that the victim died as a result of the fire. Her identity has not been released as investigators continue to seek the cause of the blaze.
According to Mobile Fire-Rescue, on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, at approximately 7:56 p.m., Mobile Fire-Rescue Department crews were dispatched to 2901 Grant Street for reports of a smoke visible from a 2-story condominium in the Stone Ridge community.
Upon arrival on scene, fire personnel discovered visible smoke and flames from a residence.
Neighbors reported that a resident might still be trapped inside. All other condo units were successfully evacuated prior to fire department arrival on scene.
Fire suppression teams entered the structure to discover flames on the 1st floor of the structure, while search & rescue crews swept through the home in an attempt to rescue the resident.
A single, unknown-aged, elderly woman was discovered inside of the burning condo and immediately extracted. Upon a detailed assessment, paramedics at the scene confirmed that the victim was deceased as a result of the incident.
Suppression teams were able to quickly extinguish all signs of fire without allowing flames to spread to the 2nd level or any other adjacent condominiums.
There were no injuries to firefighters or any other civilians as a result of the incident. The victim’s next of kin will be notified.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined, pending further investigation. Additional details will be provided as the investigation develops.
