You will soon be able to buy a piece of World War II history. The teak deck from the USS Alabama is being replaced, and the old wood is being repurposed and sold. Local artists are creating unique keepsakes out of it.

Jonavin Murray, owner of Thrive Custom Designs in Grand Bay, says he designed many of the items and is now busy making the mementos. The wood is being repurposed into things like coins, coasters, magnets, paperweights and plaques. Murray says it’s one of the most interesting projects he's ever worked on.

"It's pretty cool. It's pretty awesome. Being a part of history and having such amazing history. This dates back to the 1940s," Murray. "It's really just been a blessing to be able to use this and get to hold history."

Battleship Memorial Park Executive Director Janet Cobb says the proceeds will help pay for the replacement of the teak deck, which is currently underway. The $8 million project began last January and is set to be completed by next October.

"For years the Battleship Commission and visitors have commented on the condition of the teak deck. It was laid down probably 1940, 1941 through 1942 when she began sea trials," said Cobb.

The repurposed teak wood will go on sale next Monday and Cobb says you'll be buying more than just a souvenir.

"To have a piece of that teak deck ties people to her glorious past," said Cobb.
