Inside the Mobile Convention Center, the popular Order of Osiris Mardi Gras ball was winding down, and people were starting to make their way out of the building, some choosing to cross Water Street on the Civic Center's pedestrian skywalk.
Among them, Order of Osiris member Glenn Fuksa Snell and his husband Patrick Snell. And as they began to cross the bridge, they were met by a disturbing sight.
"When we came out,” says Patrick, “one girl was laying on the ground, one was throwing up in traffic, and he was throwing, I don't know what he was throwing, but you could hear stuff hitting the ground off the bridge. And I told him to stop."
Glenn, a bartender and a former truck driver, says he also told them to stop.
"I said, you could cause an accident. Someone could get hit and killed. And then the fight was on."
Glenn says it lasted only seconds, but at one moment, the man came close to sending him over the skywalk into the traffic below.
"And, as the fight went on,” he says, “I almost went over. He was shoving me over, and I thought, what am I going to do, because I don't want to fall into the street."
Glenn says his attackers, still clad in their Mardi Gras tux and gowns, ran away. And as Patrick went for help, Glenn says he could tell he was badly injured. The female attacker had injured his face...
"Well, my face was bloody and stuff and I could see blood dripping down from my face."
But the worst damage was to an elbow replacement that had just finished healing.
Doctors would soon tell him, he'd have to go through another.
For the next two months, Mobile Police worked to track down those responsible for the Mardi Gras attack.
And this week, they were successful. Mobile Sheriff's deputies assisted by arresting 24 year old John Desporte. His address? Pace, Florida.
He's charged with first degree assault and harassment charges. The woman is still being sought.
"I've had a lot of emotions through this, " says Glenn. The attack has left Glenn and his Mardi Gras crew feeling less secure about downtown, but determined to let the good times continue to roll.... with this bit of advice:
"Go as two or a group,” he says. “Don't go by yourself in this world, just for safety. I don't want anyone hurt in any ball."
Desporte is out of jail on an $8,000 bond.
