The Missoula YMCA has raised $13.3 million toward its $15 million goal to complete a major rebuilding project that includes a new 7,000-square-foot child care center.
"Once that piece is completed, we'll be able to demo the old child care building. That's actually the original Y. That building has long served its purpose. It's time for it to retire. We are looking forward to that day," said Heather Foster, CEO of the Missoula YMCA.
The Missoula YMCA cares for about 130 children between campuses on Russell Street and Palmer Street.
There's a waitlist of nearly 60 children between the two facilities.
There are also several after-school licensed care programs, altogether making Missoula's YMCA the largest licensed care provider in Montana.
"The need for child care continues to grow. The pandemic shined a light on the importance and infrastructure that child care creates," said Foster.
The new center will be able to add room for about 50 more children and infants, in addition to remodeling nearly all of the main facility with a new exercise studio and retiled pool.
"Our drop-in child care right in the front door will get an additional two-story, indoor, big play structure that will be added to that space. All locker rooms will get remodeled and refreshed," added Foster.
A new Youth Innovation Space will offer kids ages 7 and older an area where they can access computer technology, a maker’s space and a test kitchen.
"Outside, we'll be adding an all-abilities playground, a splashpad and an outdoor sports space called an 'airnasium,'" said Foster. "That will house everything from basketball to volleyball to pickleball. So it's a pretty big project."
The Y is looking to raise another $1.5 million still needed for the rebuild and remodel.
