Lowndes County Pre-K Student Found in Possession of Gun at School

Lowndes County Schools Superintendent Sam Allison issued a recorded message to parents from Caledonia Elementary School stating that a weapon had been discovered on the school's grounds. Allison urged that the situation had been handled and that there was no immediate threat to students or staff.

According to Sheriff Eddie Hawkins, a teacher found the weapon; a 9 mm handgun brought to school by a four year old pre-k student. The gun was not loaded and the child did not have ammo in his possession or belongings.

Hunter Turnage, a resident of Steens, was charged with contributing to the delinquency or neglect of a minor and allowing a student to bring a weapon onto campus, which are all misdemeanors. Turnage, 24, is the boyfriend of the child's mother and claimed that the weapon was kept out of reach of the child and didn't know how he had gotten it.

Superintendent Allison said that the district is taking steps to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
