The Mineral County Sheriff’s Office hosted a meeting Monday night to explain to the community what happened over the weekend after an officer-involved shooting turned deadly.
Bullet holes mark pillars and buildings at the St. Regis Travel Center after armed robbers fled Osburn, Idaho, and stopped in the community.
Locals sitting just feet away from the incident recall what happened.
“I booked into the bathroom, put my face into the ground, laid down, and all of a sudden ‘pop, pop,’ and I realized it was real,” resident Leonard Upton said.
Officials confirm one suspect died in a shooting and one hostage was transported to a Missoula hospital after being shot by a suspect.
One by one, community members filed in to Monday’s debriefing, some sharing how that day impacted them.
“Not knowing what was happening was really scary, and I think the best part for me was when I got outside and saw all the law enforcement there,” one resident said.
“It was, for me, the most terrifying situation, having my son with me,” another said.
The Mineral County sheriff couldn't give many details about the ongoing investigation and had no information on the victim in the hospital.
Sheriff Ryan Funke instead raised concerns about communications with Idaho authorities.
“This is an ongoing investigation. We’re looking at more information on where the disconnect was from Idaho to Montana, and I assure you were going to look into all avenues,” Funke said.
After the meeting ended, a specialist was there to speak to any member of the community about ways to cope with the shooting and how to identify signs of PTSD, trauma or stress.
Officials offered resources including local counseling services, as well as the National Mental Health Information Center, the Office for Victims of Crime, the National Child Traumatic Stress Network and others.
