Pet Doc: Beebout Veterinary Medical Center Shell-ebrates turtles!
KEARNEY, Neb. — May 23rd is World Turtle Day and there is a lot to know if you are considering having a turtle join your family. Rose Adrian, a Vet Tech from the Beebout Veterinary Medical Center, suggests that people start with a painted turtle or a side neck, where they can seek advice from either BVMC or PetSmart. There are several different kinds of turtles, including some really cool ones, but Adrian encourages future turtle owners to purchase their tortoise from a reputable breeder. "I really like how PetSmart here in Kearney takes care of them," said Adrian. There is a rescue based out of York, Nebraska, called The Lizard Lighthouse, which does a lot of reptile rescue. Adrian mentioned that they do a wonderful job with their turtles, so be sure to check with your local rescues to see what they have available. When you get a reptile, because you're not really sure about their background, always take them in for a veterinary check. "They carry a lot of diseases that can be easily transmitted to any other reptile you have at home, so make sure to wash your hands and clean everything before handling another reptile," Adrian said.
