A 1-year-old girl is dead after a shooting in Milwaukee on Saturday. Milwaukee police say the child was shot outside the library at N. 19th Street and W. Atkinson Avenue.
According to police, at approximately 8 p.m., a known suspect shot the girl inside a car during an argument between adults. Milwaukee firefighters said the victim was then dropped off at Station 36 on N. 27th Street.
The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's told 12 News the girl was then taken to Children's Wisconsin Hospital, where she later died. The medical examiner identified the child as Zyare Nevels.
Community members gathered near the shooting location Sunday.
"This is one of our hotspots. This is an area that we plan to continue to be," said Quinn Taylor, the Community Violence Prevention Program Coordinator for the City's Office for Violence Prevention.
The group went door to door and passed out anti-gun violence resources.
"Last night was another tragedy. Just too many of those type of situations happening this year," Taylor said.
Sunday's event was planned as a part of the National Gun Violence Awareness Month Cease Fire Weekend. Taylor said what happened Saturday night in the same neighborhood only emphasizes the need for the city to put the guns down.
"That has to stop. As a community, we have to take a stand against that type of activity," Taylor said.
