‘Gunshots every night’ near 37th and Townsend, neighor says

One woman said she went to the cemetery for Memorial Day and noticed how many graves were for young people. She said too many lives are lost to violence, and she's not the only one stepping up in her neighborhood.

Before we could even get her name, Sheila Brooks made it clear that there's no nonsense on her street.

"Pull them pants up now!" Come on, baby. Thank you. God bless you. There you go," said Brooks. "I'm 79. I'm a great, great, great, great grandma."

Brooks lives near 37th and Townsend.  Her decorated yard and old-school mindset are just a few ways she hopes to bring peace to her streets.

"That’s because they come past here a lot," said Brooks.

Two men died after they were shot near her block early Sunday.

"The violence I hear is gunshots every night," said Brooks. "Constantly."

"I’m almost numb to it," said Kenyette Blue. "It’s almost becoming the norm."

Up the street from Brooks is the House of Prayer Restoration Missionary Baptist Church. That's where these two women hope to make a difference, too.

"Same block, same block, same neighborhood, same ZIP code," said Blue.

"Working with other people in the community to make a positive influence and impact," said Tracy Roby, minister.

In the meantime, no matter what goes by Brooks' home, nothing really goes past without her blessing.

"Hi, God bless, stay safe, baby," said Brooks.
