A report out of the San Jose Police Officer's Union found hundreds of officers would be retiring over the next few months.

"We do have a number of vacancies right now, but fortunately we're able to absorb those vacancies well, where it's not affecting our police services," said Frank Morales, Milpitas Assistant Police Chief.

Morales added that the department is fortunate that many of the retirements are not sudden. "People that have been with the organization feel a connection with the city and give us a lot of warning so we're able to prepare," he said.

Now, it's all about recruiting.

"The truth is we're all competing for the same people, so we try and do our best to show them that Milpitas is a great place to work, so our job is to highlight that and get people to come in," he said.
