Sophomore Averie Peterson won three events and finished second in a fourth to lift the Santiam girls track and field squad to a sixth-place finish at the May 19-20 Special District 2 meet at Blanchet Catholic in Salem.
The girls scored 69 points, while the boys squad, led by Gage Twede, scored 57 points and also finished sixth. Host Blanchet won both team titles.
Peterson, Twede and five other Wolverines qualified for the Class 2A state championships this Friday and Saturday (note this refers to May 25-26) at Hayward Field in Eugene.
Peterson captured the 400 (1:00.54), the 800 (2:22.11) and the triple jump (a personal best 33-6.75) while taking second in the long jump (15-4.25). Peterson was especially dominant in the 800, where she repeated her district title of a year ago by more than 12 seconds.
Also heading to state are Ellie Lindemann, who won the pole vault with a mark of 7-10 and Emma Longfellow, who finished second in the discus (130-9.75).
Twede, a senior, qualified for state in three events. He took third in the 400 (53.34), third in the long jump (19-9.5) and fifth in the triple jump (39-3). Teammates Marcos Moreno and Parker Hanna are headed to state in two events apiece. Hanna took second in the pole vault at 11-4 and was sixth in the high jump at 5-7. Moreno was third in the discus, where he set a personal best of 122-11.25, and fourth in the pole vault (10-10). Also headed to state is Lyric Hernandez, who finished fifth in the shot put (40-8).
Scio, meanwhile, is sending four athletes to the Class 3A state meet, also May 25-26 at Hayward Field.
Athena Lau won both the 1,500 and 3,000 at the May 17-18 Special District 3 meet at Newcomb Stadium in Scio. Her times, 5:22.36 in the 1,500 and 11:58.23 in the 3K, both are season bests.
Teammate Levi Forson is headed to state in two events, the pole vault (second in 11-4) and the 300 hurdles (second in a PR 43.71).
Also qualifying for the loggers was Vivy Hirschfielder second in pole vault, 6-11) and Emily Zamudio (second in 300 hurdles, 53.51).
Softball: Santiam went on the road in the first round of the Class 2A-1A playoffs and took down Lost River of Merrill 20-1 in five innings on Monday, May 22. On Wednesday, May 24, the No. 18 Wolverines fell to No. 2 Grant Union/Prairie City in the round of 16 with a final score of 0-15 in four innings. Scio, the top-ranked squad in Class 3A, meanwhile, took down No. 17 Douglas on May 24, scoring 20 runs in three innings. The final score was 20-0. Scio will meet Valley Catholic in the quarterfinals on Friday, May 26, at a time to be announced. Valley Catholic advanced with a 6-4 win over No. 9 Dayton.
Running: The annual Santiam Hospital Fun Run and Health Walk events are set for Saturday, June 10. The day includes 3-kilometer, 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer runs as well as a 5K walk. All events start at 8:30 a.m. in front of the hospital at 1401 N 10th Ave., Stayton, with registration 7 – 8 a.m. Runners and walkers can register online at santiamhospital.org.
