Thief’s stealing of boots not his sole feat: Middleburg Heights Police Blotter

MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio

These boots are made for walking: Pearl Road

An officer at 2:11 p.m. March 11 went to the Red Wing store regarding a report of a stolen pair of boots.

He learned that a man had come into the store and asked for a size 13 boot. The employee brought two types of boots out and placed them on the bench. One was the pair that the customer asked for and the other was another option.

The customer took the box he had asked for and walked out of the store without paying. He walked to the passenger-side door of a car, got in and left. The employee did not notice a rear license plate on the car.

The boots stolen were valued at $260.

The employee gave a good description of the suspect. Police learned that the North Olmsted Red Wing store had experienced a similar incident, with possibly the same car involved. The thefts involved the same style of boot and size.

One of the managers sent video footage of the incident. The detective bureau is investigating.

Theft: Rosbough Drive

An officer went to Extended Stay America at 8:54 a.m. March 15 and spoke with an employee. She said she had finished her night shift, started her car and noticed that it was very loud.

She called her husband, who came to the scene. He saw that the catalytic converter had been removed.

The officer checked the area for surveillance cameras. The victim was told to contact her insurance company. No suspects were mentioned.

Warrant: Bagley Road

Police went to the Red Roof Inn March 13 regarding an unresponsive man who was locked inside a room’s bathroom.

The caller was unable to get inside the bathroom because his friend was on the floor in front of the doorway. The door was latched.

The fire department arrived and helped the man out of the bathroom. He was unresponsive, but breathing. He was transported to the hospital.

The friend said he and the man in the bathroom had consumed a drug. He went to check on his friend who was unresponsive and called for help.

Police checked the friend, who had an active warrant. He was arrested and transported to a location where Geauga County took custody.

Theft: Engle Road

An Amazon worker went to the police station at 4:56 a.m. March 12. He said that at about 3:50 that morning, his cell phone fell out of his pocket in the parking lot. After realizing his phone was missing, he searched the lot with negative results.

He spoke with security, who then looked at the cameras. An unknown employee had picked up the phone, got into his car and drove away.

Security would not provide the victim with any information about the man or what car he was driving. The victim told the officer that he wanted to pursue charges against the man if he was identified.

Drunken driving: West 130th Street

An officer at 1:59 a.m. March 12 followed a car that was weaving within its lane. He stopped it.

The officer smelled alcohol coming from the car. The driver’s eyes were glassy. The driver admitted to having a couple of beers at a concert earlier. The driver told the officer he was drunk and should not have been operating a motor vehicle.

After failing sobriety field tests, the driver was cited for drunken driving. His breath test measured a .168 blood-alcohol level at 4 a.m.

His passenger was given a courtesy ride home.

Stolen car: Bagley Road

At 5:50 a.m. March 11, an officer received a Flock camera alert about a possible stolen car near Bagley and Engle roads. He patrolled the area, later seeing the car in the Red Roof Inn parking lot. There were no occupants.

The car had been stolen out of Cleveland. Police then learned that a woman was the possible suspect that drove it away using keys. The woman was the girlfriend of the car’s owner.

An officer viewed security video at the hotel. It showed that the car had backed into the spot at 6 a.m. March 11. A man and woman exited the car, with the woman appearing to be the driver. The man, who was not the car’s owner, paid for a hotel room.

The car was towed.
