Portage Council passes ordinance giving it less oversight over personnel matters
The Portage City Council has less oversight over personnel matters, under an ordinance adopted Tuesday. Mayor Austin Bonta said the change is designed to bring Portage in line with Indiana Code, which typically leaves personnel matters up to a city's board of works. He said Portage had been regulating them through council ordinances, since it didn't have a human resources department.
Valpo Council voices support for police, as public debates whether council president should resign
Following last month's police-involved shooting, the Valparaiso City Council is voicing its support for officers. Council member Jack Pupillo says the council plans to formally recognize their bravery, once Indiana State Police release the full report of their investigation. MICHIGAN CITY — Franciscan Health Michigan City will offer the six-week FIT-Together program for households with children between the ages of 8 and 15. The program is a family-centered approach to health and wellness. Attendees will learn the seven Cs of family resilience, including control, competence, coping, confidence, connections, character and contribution through individual and family-centered physical activities and tips. FIT-Together takes place from 3:30 to 5 p.m. CDT on Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 4 to July 18 (no program on July 2 or July 4) at The Temple Total Fitness Center, 1914 E. U.S. 20. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and gym shoes to all sessions. The program is free, but registration is required.
