By CBS Miami Team,
MIAMI -- One person was killed and two motorcycle officers with the Miami Police Department were hurt following a crash Friday afternoon in which a Good Samaritan rushed to help the cops, authorities said.
The officers, who were not identified, were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment, according to a statement from a police spokesperson.
"They're good," police Capt. Freddie Cruz said. "They are very banged up."
.The wreck occurred shortly before noon when the officers collided with another vehicle at the intersection of NW 25th Avenue and 26th Street.
Police did not immediately provide details about the circumstances that led up to the crash.
A bystander came to the aid of the officers, who are motorcycle officers but were riding in the same car at the time of the crash.
"The cars were smoking and I saw that and I got them out," said resident Juan Rodriguez, who saw the incident. "He told me his buddy was on the other side and I didn't know it was two officers and so I got them both out."
Police confirmed that one person died, and a bystander said it was the driver of the truck who was killed. The identity of the victim who died was pending.
Live video from the scene showed a box truck tipped over on its side
Police are trying to determine what led to the crash.
"They're on the scene, checking cameras, talking to witnesses and trying to put the puzzle together," Cruz said, thanking Rodriguez for his quick thinking. "When I hear stories like that (the) person is a hero in our eyes. Remember, we are all in this together. Officers have families they all want to go home to. Obviously, anytime we are out in this uniform we are here to serve . . . It's great when the community can help us out."
