GHS Cheerleaders and Mascots announced
Groesbeck High School has recently completed its annual cheerleading and mascot tryouts. Held on Saturday, April 13, the event saw a number of talented students vying for a spot on the varsity and junior varsity cheerleading squads, as well as for the coveted position of the high school mascot. After a rigorous selection process, the judges announced the names of the successful candidates. Lyric Hargrove was chosen as the mascot for the upcoming season. The 2024-2025 Groesbeck High School Varsity Cheerleading Squad will consist of Brittyn Bradley, Chloe Crane, Ayahna Dunn, Kaylee Flippin, Kimbrey Hileman, Mallory Meyer, Landrie Pringle, Carly Scott, Allie Verm, and Kaydence Worsham. Meanwhile, the 2024-2025 Junior Varsity Cheerleading Squad will include Gracie deCordova, Korina Dixon, Kaira Hargrove, Kara Masters, Raylee Masters, Amaya Ray, Ava Sadler, Hannah Slater, and Kealey Trojacek. Congratulations to all the successful candidates, and best of luck to the Groesbeck High School cheerleading squads and mascot for the upcoming season.

, , , , Groesbeck ISD has spent this school year celebrating teachers that deserve recognition for their hard work, educational prowess, connection with students, character, and more, based on popular vote by their co-workers.Every month, at the regular board meetings, campus principals have praised and awarded these educators the title of “Teacher of the Month”.At the GISD Board meeting on Monday, April 15, Teachers of the Year were announced as follows: H.O. Whitehurst Elementary- Erica Beldin (Pre-kindergarten)Enge-Washington Intermediate- Brandi Simmons (Special Education)Groesbeck Middle- Windy Roberts (Academic Success, RLA teacher, Coach)Groesbeck High- Debra Brown (math) GISD Superintendent Anthony Figueroa explained that of the four winning teachers, one from the primary schools (H.O & Enge) and one from the secondary schools (GMS & GHS) will be selected to represent GISD for ESC (Education Service Center) Region 12 Teacher of the Year Contest.The four teachers will also be recognized at the 2025 Chamber Banquet, and receive a stipend from the district. Volunteers needed for Mexia food distribution event
MEXIA, Texas (FOX 44) – The Central Texas Food Bank is in need of volunteers at the Mexia Mobile Pantry. There will be a food distribution taking place this Wednesday, from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The distribution location is at the Navarro College South at 901 North Drive M.L.K. Jr. Highway in Mexia. They are also looking for more regular volunteers at this site.

City grants foundation funds for museum, festival
Mexia City Council granted requests from the Cindy Walker Foundation for hotel/motel occupancy tax funding at its Monday, April 15, meeting to restore the deceased Country and Western songwriter’s Mexia home and to stage a Cindy Walker Day event July 20. The grants totaled $53,500 with $15,000 going to the Brook Street home restoration as a 1962-era museum and $38,500 for the fete at The Cowboy Club on the anniversary of Walker’s birthday. Groesbeck golfer Johnny Howard missed qualifying for the state tournament by the slimmest of margins in his final chance as a high school player.The Goat senior lost on the third hole of a sudden-death playoff for the final state berth at the Region III-3A Golf Tournament at Brenham Country Club on Tuesday, April 16.Howard shot a 75 in the first round of the regional on Monday, April 15. The audience consisted of a few chamber members, Police Chief Chris Henson, and two members of the community.Getz spoke about the Kailee Mills Foundation and the tragic loss of 16-year-old Kailee Mills in 2017. Teague sending 5 to region meet
, Six for six. That’s how many participants - individual or quartet - the Teague boys track and field program had at the Districts 19/20-3A Area Meet last Friday in McGregor. Six is the same number of participants that the Lions will have at this weekend’s Region III-Class 3A Meet at Midway High School in Waco. Teague earned one first place and five third place finishes at last week’s area meet. The top four finishes in each event advanced to the region meet. The necks of Kemauri Evans, J’Kybryen Harris and Jehmel Rice were likely strained by the number of medals that they earned. Rice earned a quartet of bronze medals, while Evans earned three bronze, and Harris picked up two bronze and the lone gold medal. Harris earned his gold medal in the triple jump with a school record leap of 45 feet. Rice was third in the event. Evans and Rice finished third in the 100 and 200 meter runs, respectively. Evans, Harris and Rice each ran legs on the 4x100 and 4x200 meter relays as well. The trio ran with Bryce Bates in the 4x100, and Zak Leija in the 4x200. Both relays finished third.

Early voting for the Saturday, May 4, municipal and school board election kicks off Monday, April 22. There will be contested races in Mexia ISD and the City of Coolidge. In Mexia ISD, incumbent Trustee Jackie Craig will be opposed by John Schaefer for Place 6. Incumbent Trustee Ron Fowler will be opposed by Keith Smith and Lyle DuBus. Early voting will take place at Mexia ISD Administration Building at 616 N. Red River St. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 22-26 and April 29-30. On Saturday, May 4, voting will take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Mexia Civic Center, 101 S. McKinney St. In the City of Coolidge incumbent Mayor Tonia Bruckner will be challenged by Jay John McClinton and Richard Green.
