Federal agents respond after explosion reported in southern New Hampshire
A reported explosion in Merrimack, New Hampshire, has prompted federal agents to respond to the scene.
The Merrimack Police Department said officers and firefighters responded to the intersection of Pearson and Grapevine roads shortly before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday after receiving numerous reports of an explosion in the area.
"I hard an unbelievably loud explosion," said area resident Karyn Merriman. "It sounded really, really sharp and fast. It shook the house and rattled the window panes."
When first responders arrived at the scene, they found evidence of a possible explosion, which prompted them to secure the scene and the surrounding area.
Home video cameras in the neighborhood captured the sound of an explosion Tuesday afternoon and one of those cameras, mounted on a house blocks away from the scene, shook during the explosion.
“A lot of unknowns, but it’s pretty wild to happen in this town — a quiet, quaint town,” one resident told NewsCenter 5 reporter John Atwater.
Members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have been spotted at the scene with local police officers and firefighters.
Merrimack police confirmed that the incident is being actively investigated by local, state and federal partners.
Police did state that there is no threat to the public and that Pearson Road had reopened Tuesday night.
Atwater spotted a white sedan with a cracked windshield that was towed away from the scene late Tuesday night.
