Iowa artist celebrates Medal of Honor recipients in Freedom Rock's 25th year
Freedom Rock artist Ray "Bubba" Sorensen has been painting a new mural on the boulder in Adair County each year for 25 years.
This year's design on the 60-ton rock that draws thousands of visitors each year to its location between Menlo and Greenfield celebrates Medal of Honor recipients who died during service.
Sorensen features WWI veteran Freddie Stowers, WWII veteran Samuel D. Dealey, Korean War veteran Jack Glennon Hanson, Vietnam veterans William H. Pitsenbarger and Miguel Keith and Afghanistan veteran and Navy Seal Michael Murphy, with paintings of their faces around the rock.
He said his inspiration came from watching one famous war movie.
"It still is like the movie 'Saving Private Ryan' will give you goosebumps," he said. "That scene in the first half hour when the men are storming the beaches of Normandy ... just that idea that this is all the closer I've been to war is sitting in a movie theater. As soon as I left, I was like, 'I have to say "thank you" to our veterans. I have to find a way to honor them.'"
Sorensen's children — Indie, Michael and Liberty — all helped with the painting this year.
Sorensen has painted Freedom Rocks in all of Iowa's 99 counties.
He plans to be at the original Freedom Rock, 2301-2319 120th St. — southwest of Menlo — over Memorial Day weekend to meet with visitors.
