Iowa artist celebrates Medal of Honor recipients in Freedom Rock's 25th year
SUMMER. THE ARTIST BEHIND THE FREEDOM ROCK HAS RETURNED TO PAINT THAT LANDMARK FOR A 25TH TIME. KCCI IS ETHAN HUMBLE VISITED THE TOURIST DESTINATION TODAY. HE TELLS US WHAT THE THEME WILL BE FOR THE ROCK THIS YEAR. ETHAN. YES. STACY RAY SORENSEN, BETTER KNOWN AS BUBBA, HAS BEEN PAINTING THE FREEDOM ROCK EVERY YEAR SINCE HE WAS A COLLEGE STUDENT. HE WAS MOVED BY CINEMATIC DEPICTIONS OF WAR AND FELT HE HAD TO USE HIS ARTISTIC TALENTS TO SHOW HIS ADMIRATION OF OUR COUNTRY’S VETERANS. THE PAINTINGS HAVE EVOLVED QUITE A BIT OVER THE YEARS, AND SORENSEN HAD THIS THEME FOR PAINTING NUMBER 25. THE THEME THAT GOES ALL THE WAY AROUND THIS YEAR IS MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENTS THAT HAVE GIVEN THEIR LIFE FOR THEIR COUNTRY. SO I HAVE I’VE NEVER REALLY DONE THAT. I’VE PUT MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENTS ON BEFORE, BUT I’VE NEVER REALLY DONE THAT THEME ALL THE WAY AROUND. AND SO IT WAS JUST THE STORIES THAT I READ THROUGH. I MEAN, THERE’S THOUSANDS OF RECIPIENTS, BUT I JUST KIND OF CHERRY PICKED A FEW OF THE STORIES THAT WERE INTERESTING TO ME. SORENSEN SAID HE HAS THREE GOALS IN PAINTING THE FREEDOM ROCK TO HONOR AMERICA’S VETERANS, TO PROMOTE TOURISM TO THE AREA, AND TO PROVIDE FOR HIS FAMILY. HE PLANS TO BE AT THE FREEDOM ROCK OVER MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND,
