7-year-old caught at school with loaded gun in backpack

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 7-year-old boy was caught with a loaded gun in his backpack at an elementary school in Parkway Village, according to Memphis Police.

Just before 9 a.m. Friday, officers say they responded to Evans Elementary School at 4949 Cottonwood Road regarding the incident.

MPD says the 7-year-old boy was in possession of a loaded handgun in his backpack.

According to the Memphis Shelby county school direct, the student took the gun from a guardian and showed it off to classmates before another student alerted staff.

The handgun was then recovered by police. No injuries were reported. The child was taken into custody by the Department of Child Services.

This is still an ongoing investigation.
