Jastiny’s grandmother, Towana Johnson, says she woke up on March 22 and went to get Jastiny ready for the day. That’s when she found the young girl in her room unresponsive.
“I was just holding her and I was shaking her to wake up and I said, ‘come on baby just wake up,” Johnson said. “And I was just praying to God just one more time, just one more time.”
Johnson was raising Jastiny and her brother because their mother suffered from severe mental illness and was in and out of institutions.
Southaven Police have not released what they believe happened to Jastiny, but her mother, Jessica Tabor, is charged with capital murder. Johnson said that she’d done everything she could to get Jessica more mental help and give her grandchildren the best life, but the system failed them.
Today’s visitation for Jastiny will be held at Henderson Funeral Home on Getwell Road from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday there will be a going home celebration at Longview Heights Baptist Church in Olive Branch at 10:30 a.m.
