Memphis women’s basketball player Jamirah Shutes has been charged with assault after punching Bowling Green State University’s Elissa Brett after a game.
Bowling Green Athletics announced Friday that the university’s police department charged Shutes and would be conducting its own review of the situation.

“Following Thursday’s unwarranted physical incident after the WNIT home game, the Bowling Green State University Police Department has charged a member of the Memphis Women’s Basketball team with assault. Additionally, BGSU Athletics is conducting its own review. Violence is never acceptable and our priority remains the health, safety and support of our student-athlete, who is recovering and doing well. This is an active investigation in conjunction with the City of Bowling Green Prosecutor, and no further comment is available at this time,” the statement said.
The University of Memphis athletics department said the incident was “not consistent” with its expectations for student-athletes.

The incident occurred while the teams were shaking hands after Bowling Green defeated Memphis 73-60 in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament.

The punch from Shutes caused Brett to fall to the ground. Shutes was escorted off by a member of the Memphis staff.
“We’re still kind of figuring all those things out, what happened,” Bowling Green head coach Robyn Fralich said at a press conference after the game.
