Memphis schools stopped giving laptops to every student this year
Sign up for Chalkbeat Tennessee’s free newsletter to keep up with statewide education policy and Memphis-Shelby County Schools. Memphis-Shelby County Schools has quietly ended a yearslong policy of giving every student their own personal laptop or tablet . Parents and educators at Memphis’ White Station High School were taken by surprise last month when school began without students receiving the devices they had in years past. The apparent change has caused confusion and last-minute scrambling to adjust classroom instruction. In an Aug. 18 email obtained by Chalkbeat, White Station Principal Carrye Holland told parents that the school was shifting classroom instruction to be less “heavily based on technology” because it could no longer assign each student their own device. “At this time, we are not able to provide devices for all students and do not anticipate being able to do so moving forward,” she wrote. It’s unclear how many schools are being affected by the change. Although Superintendent Roderick Richmond called the district’s laptop policy unsustainable in last month’s board meeting, MSCS has not answered specific questions about how the policy change is being applied. Richmond said in the Aug. 25 meeting that MSCS purchased enough devices to maintain the

Madison Suffers Another Exteme Loss
The Hayti Indians came away with a big 56 - 0 win over the Madison Trojans on Friday night at Madison Senior High School. Hayti kept the pressure on throughout the game, scoring again and again while Madison was unable to get a touchdown on the board. Despite the final score, Madison continued to battle for every possession, while Hayti showed why it was able to control the game from start to finish. Hayti received the opening kickoff, and the teams traded possessions through the first few down before Indians RB Cadd Cunningham broke through for the first touchdown of the game. Hayti attempted a two-point conversion but was unsuccessful, putting the Indians ahead 6-0. Indians’ KeAnthony Taylor handled the kickoff, one of many he had throughout the night. Madison briefly took possession and had one opportunity to move the ball 10 yards before Hayti responded with a 28-yard touchdown. The Indians successfully converted the ensuing two-point conversion, extending the lead to 14-0. After another Hayti kickoff, Trojan Kobe Gardner worked to advance the ball through three attempts. Penalties became a recurring feature of the game, with flags on both sides repeatedly affecting plays and walking back results. After Madison’s
