MSNBC’s Kornacki Breaks Down Why Harris is Hardly a Lock — Despite Polling Momentum: ‘Trump Has Run From Behind Before’

MSNBC national political correspondent Steve Kornacki argued Vice President Kamala Harris’s polling lead over former President Donald Trump may give her the advantage at the moment, but the former president is not in “unfamiliar territory.”

According to an aggregation of national polls, Kornacki reported on Tuesday with MSNBC anchor Ana Cabrera that Harris is averaging 48% support compared to Trump’s 45% support. Democrats have seen a polling surge since President Joe Biden suspended his reelection effort, but Kornacki noted that Biden and Hillary Clinton had better polling leads at this same point in the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections.

“If you’re a Republican, what you can take solace from here is this is not unfamiliar territory for Donald Trump,” the MSNBC data guru said.

Kornacki showed that Biden was leading by nine points while Clinton was leading Trump by five points in their respective elections.

“Hillary Clinton led on average by five points. Of course, Donald Trump won in 2016. Joe Biden had an even bigger advantage Labor Day 2020. Donald Trump didn’t win that election but certainly in the electoral college, he came this close, Ana, so Trump has run from behind before certainly,” Kornacki said.

He then highlighted just how close the electoral college map is going to be, laying out the “easiest” path to 270 votes for each candidate. Harris, he argued, can cinch the election by winning Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, while Trump would need to flip Pennsylvania and Georgia red after tight losses in 2020 and hold onto North Carolina.
