Former State Senator Charlie Smith Dannelly Gets Inaugural Award for his Leadership and Service
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Charlie Smith Dannelly is getting a special award on May 4th. He will receive the inaugural James Robert Jimmie McKee Distinguished Leadership and Service Award. This is the highest honor and recognition awarded by The JCSU 100 Club. The JCSU 100 Club was established back in 1966 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Johnson C. Smith University. McKee helped establish the club. He and others also wanted to establish the club to help offer financial support to student-athletes to keep them in school. Dannelly was also one of the charter members of The JCSU 100 Club. Organizers wanted to find a person who is known to give back to the community to honor McKee. Dannelly has spent nearly 40 years as a Charlotte city council member and state politician. At one time Dannelly was the longest politician serving Mecklenburg County. WBTV caught up with the 99-year-old recipient to get his thoughts about the award.
