TALL TIMBERS, Md. — Crews are investigating after 10 boats caught fire at a Maryland marina Wednesday causing nearly $400,000 in damages.
ATF special agents and certified fire investigators are working with the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department, the Maryland State Fire Marshal, Maryland State Police and St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office to investigate the two-alarm fire at Tall Timbers Marina.
At 12:30 p.m., firefighters responded to the marina on Herring Creek Road for a report of boat fire.
At the scene, they discovered several boats on fire under a covered pier.
Firefighters were assisted by fire boats and battled the two-alarm blaze for nearly an hour before bringing the flames under control.
Witnesses say they heard an explosion come from one of the boats and saw fire quickly spreading to the wooden pier and surrounding boats.
While investigators have not identified the cause of the fire, they say the fire was started in a 1940, 38-foot Matthew's wooden boat.
Police say two people initially reported injuries and refused EMS treatment but later took themselves to the hospital for minor injuries.
The Maryland Department of the Environment, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and the United States Guard assisted on the scene containing the oil runoff and related fuel spills.
