Letter to the Editor: Support for special needs youth are lacking in Big Sky
As the calendar flips from Autism Acceptance Month in April to Mental Health Awareness Month in May, I feel compelled to share my story. My wife and I met in Big Sky, Montana about 15 years ago. I proposed to her in the crowd on New Year’s Eve as we watched the fireworks light up Lone Peak. We raised our son for nine years here. We both work full time year-round just to make ends meet. I have been taking care of luxurious vacation rentals and managing “second” homes (some clients have as many as seven), while we were fortunate enough to get in on a three-bedroom condo in town when it didn’t cost a cool million. My wife audits food and beverage for Big Sky Resort. Our son goes to Ophir, and participates in the locals ski program each winter. All this is to say, we’re in it for the long haul, and Big Sky has given us much.

A colorful journey
Montana-based children’s author visits Big Sky to share her newest picture book with local students and families. Janet Fox first began writing children’s books and young adult novels more than 20 years ago when her son was diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, with the hope that her stories would help him learn to read better. She continued writing and honing her craft for years after her son had grown. Now, she’s an accomplished and award-winning author, and her son is too.

I am writing to express my support for Kevin Germain’s continued service on the Big Sky Resort Area District Board. I have had the privilege of knowing Kevin and his family for nearly fifteen years and in this time, I have witnessed Kevin evolve into one of Big Sky’s greatest advocates.

One spring day in 1863, six men looking for their next big gold strike found it in Alder Gulch, William Fairweather, Henry Edgar, Thomas Cover, Barney Hughes, Micheal Sweeney, and Harry Rogers left Bannack, attempting to meet and travel with James Stewart’s Yellowstone Expedition, to find gold and establish town sites along the Yellowstone. The six were two days behind the main party and trying to catch up. An encounter with a Crow tribe that left them considering the best route back to Bannack, led them up into the mountains away from the Madison River. Fairweather and Edgar slipped their gold pans into the cold creek waters beside the spot they picked for that night’s camp. They soon realized they had discovered a rich deposit of placer gold in what Edgar would name Alder Creek. Discovery Park in Virginia City just so happens to lie along Alder Creek.
