Weekly Safety Report: Crash on Will Rogers Turnpike and House Fire in Salina, Mayes County, Oklahoma
Two incidents occurred in Mayes County, Oklahoma this week. The first incident involved a serious crash on the Will Rogers Turnpike, which closed the eastbound lanes near Adair. The crash involved a semi truck and a pickup truck, and details are still awaited regarding injuries and transportation. The second incident was a house fire in Salina, where a family lost their mobile home and all their belongings. Multiple fire departments responded, but the family of five lost everything.
Severe Thunderstorm Warning by NWS
Instruction: For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. The National Weather Service in Tulsa has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for parts of northeastern Oklahoma. The warning is in effect until 8:30 PM CDT. A severe thunderstorm was detected over Inola, moving east at 25 mph. The storm is expected to bring 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-sized hail, which may cause damage to vehicles. Additionally, roofs, siding, and trees may be affected by the strong winds. Areas such as Pryor Creek, Chouteau, Inola, Locust Grove, Salina, Sportsmen Acres Community, Mazie, Murphy, and Snowdale State Park are in or near the path of the storm. Radar indicates a potential hail size of 1.00 inch and maximum wind gusts of 60 mph.
RSU’s Mayes County Scholarship Breakfast Raises Over $20,000 for Student Scholarships
More than $20,000 was raised to aid Rogers State University students at the recent Mayes County Scholarship Breakfast. Held Thursday, Sept. 21, at the Mayes County Event Center, the scholarship breakfast is an annual fundraiser which provides scholarships for students from Mayes County attending Rogers State University in Pryor, as well as students from Mayes County enrolled in classes at RSU in Claremore.

Southern Craig, northeastern Rogers, northern Delaware, and northern Mayes counties are currently being impacted by strong thunderstorms. The storms, moving southeast at a speed of 35 mph, were detected on Doppler radar at 12:09 PM CDT. The main hazard associated with these storms is wind gusts of up to 40 mph. This could result in the knocking down of small tree limbs and the displacement of unsecured objects. Various locations, including Vinita, Jay, Grove, South West City, Langley, Adair, Bernice, Ketchum, Disney, Big Cabin, Pensacola, Honey Creek State Park, Cherokee State Park, Bernice State Park, Cleora, Chloeta, White Oak, Dodge, Cayuga, and Strang, are in or near the path of these storms. Additionally, the area between mile markers 264 and 289 on Interstate 44 is also affected. The maximum hail size is 0.00 inches, and the maximum wind gust is 40 mph.

A strong thunderstorm is expected to affect southwestern Delaware, southeastern Mayes, and northeastern Cherokee counties until 12:15 AM CDT. At 11:45 PM CDT, Doppler radar detected a strong thunderstorm moving east at a speed of 20 mph, located 3 miles southeast of Locust Grove. The storm poses a hazard of wind gusts up to 40 mph and nickel-sized hail. The source of this information is radar data. The impact of the storm may include the potential for gusty winds to cause damage to small tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Additionally, minor damage to vegetation from hail is possible. Locations in or near the storm's path include Locust Grove, Salina, Rose, and Leach. The maximum size of hail is estimated to be 0.88 inches, while the maximum wind gust is expected to reach 40 mph.

Claremore Man Dies in Motorcylce Accident
A Claremore man is dead after a single-vehicle crash in Mayes County. The fatality collision happened late Saturday just before midnight on East 420 Road about a mile east of Strang. A 2007 Harley Davidson FLTR, driven by 43-year-old Allen Michael Vargas failed to negotiate a curve to the right, left the roadway and hit the ground.
