Stark County Hunger Task Force keeps kids connected with backpack food program over the summer
With the end of the school year at the Canton City School District, non-profit organizations such as Stark County Hunger Task Force are stepping up to ensure families who count on food assistance for them and their kids can still get the support they need. The task force provides backpacks filled with food for children whose family’s income is below the poverty line. For the summer it's shifting distribution from schools to other community locations for the summer, according to Executive Director Stephanie Sweany.

CANTON ‒ The chief of the East Sparta Fire Department has paid $171 in court costs for a red light citation issued in connection with a collision between a fire truck and a tractor-trailer. Canton man sentenced to prison for providing fentanyl to Massillon man who died
CANTON – A Canton man who pleaded guilty to providing a fatal dose of fentanyl to a Massillon man in 2023 has been sentenced to six to nine years in state prison. Marcel J. Thomas, 33, pleaded guilty to felony counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of trafficking in fentanyl-related compounds, possession of fentanyl-related compounds, trafficking in cocaine, possession of cocaine and a misdemeanor possession of drugs.

19-year-old who died after motorcycle crash in Wallhaven Sunday identified
A 19-year-old Akron man was killed Sunday night after his Yamaha motorcycle struck a minivan in Wallhaven, according to Akron police. At about 10:20 p.m., Jexsavith Cerriteno was traveling south on South Hawkins Avenue. A Toyota Sienna was heading east on Edgemoor Avenue and made a left turn onto South Hawkins, causing the motorcycle to hit the van. Cerriteno was ejected and sustained critical injuries. He was transported to Cleveland Clinic Akron General where he died about an hour later. Police said he was a wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
