Fire at 630 Erie St. N in Massillon Saturday is under investigation

MASSILLON ‒ The cause of a fire at a mixed-use building at 630 Erie St. N remained under investigation Saturday afternoon, said fire Capt. Robert Knapp.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 12:39 p.m. Saturday. They arrived to find smoke showing and had the fire under control in about 40 minutes, Knapp said.

He said the front of the building was used as an apartment, but the use of the back of the building was undetermined. Online records of the Stark County Auditor's Office describe the 1927 structure as a machine shop.

It is unknown whether anyone was occupying the apartments at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.

Knapp said it took firefighters a while to get to the fire because it was in a high spot in the interior of the back of the building.

The Jackson Township and Lawrence Township fire departments each sent a vehicle to the scene.
