As Maryland Governor Wes Moore prepares his pitch for the new Commanders ownership group to keep the team at the site of FedEx Field, one major question posed by BMitch and Finlay was the issue of traffic and transportation.

The governor was not shying away from that issue, and says it is one of the main focuses as his team puts together plans to maximize FedEx Field and keeping the franchise in Prince George’s County.

“Transportation is going to be the key to any sort of momentum,” Gov. Moore said. “I am very competitive. I want Maryland. I want Maryland to win by a couple touchdowns over this next decade. But I know to do that, to get some of the biggest activities that I think Maryland should be competing for, things like transportation becomes a huge stumbling block.”

One of the main focuses of that initiative is improving public transportation to the stadium, including one mode of transportation that county leaders say hasn’t been developed in more than six decades.

“Already this year, we have allocated $400 million in state funding that’s gonna go towards the blue line corridor and everything that’s gonna go around FedEx Field,” Gov. Moore said. “When we talk about the $400 in state funding for the blue line corridor, that includes things like how we are talking about transportation in a different way. When we talk about asset mapping the state and talking bus lines, mass transit, we want to create additional transportation options to get people to and from the event.”

Gov. Moore sees what has been done in areas like Atlanta and Truist Park, home of the Braves, where areas around the stadium have been boosted by hotels and restaurants to enhance the gameday experience. That will be a priority around FedEx Stadium, but one of the main objectives will be improving the trip to that area for fans.

“It means we have to be able to do things like fixing the roads and bridges and be able to create a level of ease when it comes to traffic,” Gov. Moore said. “We’re actually working very closely with local jurisdiction and the federal administration…we want Maryland to get its fair share to focus on all the transportation pieces. You can’t have economic mobility without physical mobility.”
