A new report shows the number of antisemitic incidents is on the rise, and Maryland is no exception.Monday night, the Foundation to Combat Antisemitism aired a public service announcement during NBC's "The Voice" to mobilize all groups to speak out against hate, with the support of local partners The Associated and the Baltimore Jewish Council.Howard Libit, of the Baltimore Jewish Council, said the campaign comes at a critical time."(There has been) a 98% increase in incidents in Maryland from 2021-22. It speaks to the increasing hate and antisemitism. It's the Jewish community, but (also) against so many other communities," Libit said.In Maryland, 109 antisemitic incidents were reported in 2022.The council joined the Associated Jewish Federation Monday as an official partner of "#StandUpToJewishHate." It's a new national campaign to mobilize all Americans, and especially non-Jews, to combat antisemitism."It's going to be a $25 million national advertising campaign on TV and social media to really focus on the surge in hate against Jews," Libit said. "It launches on 'The Voice.' It includes 'The Today Show' and Kelly Clarkson."The campaign features a blue square as a unifying symbol of support. Jewish people only make up 2.4% of the American population, yet they are the victims of 55% of religious-based hate crimes.The Jewish Council's Emily Goodman said more needs to be done to educate kids about antisemitism."It needs to be taught and that awareness needs to be created, because how are we going to learn about each other and learn the truth?" Goodman said."With holidays like Passover, Baltimore County Police and Baltimore City Police increase their patrols and vigilance, and they make a point of being more present in the communities," Libit said.
