Marshalltown residents are urged to be on the lookout for scammers in a Facebook post from the Marshalltown Police Department Monday afternoon.
The post alerts the public of people standing next to town roads wearing traffic vests and holding buckets to raise funds for a "charitable cause."
However, when pressed to share about the cause, their story quickly falls apart.
Several residents, like Shelly Erwin, said scammers are not welcome in their town.
"It's just not right for the American people that are working their butts off out here," she said. "I just don't want to help them because they're just all scammers, and they're just people that want an easy buck."
Lisa McElaney said the scammers are diluting a population that needs help.
"I fully believe in helping out my fellow man," she said. "Now I don't know who to trust."
