Marlin ISD board gets update on bond construction
The Marlin ISD School Board of Managers met Monday, Sept. 23, at the Marlin Middle School Library with President Billy Johnson presiding. Board Managers present were Byrleen Terry, Marsha Ridlehuber, Rosalyn Dimerson, Misty Ehlers, and Dr. Darryl Henson, Superintendent of Schools. Lady Bulldogs continue season
The Marlin Lady Bulldogs volleyball team hosted the Waco Connally Lady Cadets on Friday, Sept. 20. Marlin fell short to Connally losing 3-1. Marlin won the first set 28-26, lost the second set 25-21, lost the third set 25-17, and lost the fourth set 25-23. On Friday, Sept. 27, Marlin traveled to take on the Little River Academy Lady Bees. Marlin was swept by Academy 3-0, losing the first set 25-15, the second set 25-7, and the third set 25-19. After a home game against the Bremond Lady Tigers on Tuesday, Marlin will travel to take on the Chilton Lady Pirates. The game will be on Friday, Oct. 4, and is set for 4:30 p.m.
Bulldogs fall to West, set for district play to begin
The Marlin Bulldogs football team traveled to Waco to take on the West Trojans last Friday. Marlin was defeated by West, losing 21-7. The first quarter, both teams played even. It was a defensive battle and the game was still scoreless going into the second quarter. West broke the drought and scored first in the second quarter with a 35-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead. Marlin tried to answer back on offense but came up short and was forced to punt. Marlin native honored as salesperson of the year
Kevin Odenbach was recently honored as the recipient of the Texas Allied Poultry Association Salesperson of the Year Award at the Texas Poultry Federation Convention in San Antonio. Kevin is a Marlin native, a 1991 graduate of Marlin High School and 1997 graduate of Texas A&M University, majoring in Poultry Science. He began his career as a Breeder Flock manager at Hy-Line International with ten years of service. He later became the Breeder and Hatchery manager with Sanderson Farms in Bryan and took on similar roles with JBS Pilgrim’s in Nacogdoches. Falls County Commissioners Court met at the County Courthouse in Marlin on Monday, Sept. 23, at 9 a.m. with County Judge Jay Elliott presiding. Marlin Juneteenth Organization sponsors COVID Walk
, The Marlin, TX Juneteenth Organization held its annual 3K COVID-19 Walk Saturday, Sept. 21. Beginning at the Lucille Williams Pavilion, proceeding with three rotations around County Courthouse, thirty participants engaged in the walk. Registered participants received a tee shirt. Special thanks to the sponsors including Walmart, HEB, Paul Funeral Home and the American Rescue Plan Grant. Refreshments were provided by the organization as they attentively welcomed the guest speaker, Dr. Omar Garcia, who works at the Baylor Scott & White Infectious Disease Control Center. Dr. Garcia, class of ’99 Marlinite and a COVID-19 ambassador, has served as the speaker at each COVID Walk.
Bulldogs get victory over Hearne 33-13
The Marlin Bulldogs football team traveled to Waco to take on the Hearne Eagles on Sept. 13. Marlin handily defeated Hearne 33-13. Marlin scored the lone points in the first quarter with a 5-yard touchdown run by De’angelo Wright for a 7-0 lead. Hearne answered to start the second quarter with a pick six to tie the game at 7. Marlin responded with 14 unanswered points to go into halftime leading 21-7. Voter registration deadline nears for November election
Eligible Texans planning to vote in the November general election have until Oct. 7 to register, Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson reminds folks. The registration deadline applies to both early and election day voting. “Texans have just a few short weeks left to register to vote, and I want to ensure all eligible Texans who want to make their voices heard are registered and prepared to do so,” Nelson said. Border Patrol faulted in Uvalde school shooting
A 200-page report from the Department of Homeland Security faulted U.S. Border Patrol agents who rushed to the Uvalde school shooting in 2022, concluding they “failed to establish command and had inadequate training” in one of the deadliest classroom attacks, The Dallas Morning News reported. Marlin shuts out Chilton in first-ever meeting
The Marlin Bulldogs traveled to take on the Chilton Pirates in the first-ever meeting for the two schools on Sept. 13. Marlin handily shut out Chilton 43-0. Marlin started the game on fire with a 22 point first quarter and never looked back. The second quarter was scoreless and Marlin went into halftime leading 22-0. The Bulldogs continued to pull away in the second half with a 21 point half and kept the shut out to win 43-0. Roderick Suiters had a fantastic game, throwing for 81 yards and two touchdowns, along with rushing for 82 yards and a touchdown. Caden Judie was unstoppable, catching three passes for 60 yards and two touchdowns along with returning two punt returns for a touchdown on special teams. The Bulldog defense was an immovable object, allowing just five first downs and no points. With this victory, the Bulldogs have a record of 1-2. Next up for Marlin will be a neutral site game against the Hearne Eagles. The game will be on Friday, Sept. 20, at Waco ISD Stadium and kick off is set for 7:30 p.m.

New Texas laws now in effect
It took some time, but a set of new laws and rules passed by the Texas Legislature in 2023 went into effect on Sept. 1, the Houston Chronicle reported. Prominent among these are the SCOPE Act, or Securing Children Online Through Parental Empowerment Act, which tightens restrictions for online users younger than 18. Under the SCOPE Act, users must register their age on social media and other websites. A 26-page report from the Texas Comptroller concludes that the state needs 306,000 additional homes, a shortage that has sent housing costs soaring, The Texas Tribune reported. Power grid again reaches record demand
The dog-day heat wave has sent power demands to new records, the Austin American-Statesman reported. With much of the state enduring an excessive heat warning, power demand peaked at 85,559 megawatts last week, breaking a record set last August.
