Forecast calls for drier Friday before next system arrives

No flooding was reported on Thursday, as Markleeville received .86 inches of rain with .8 inches at Spratt Creek just upstream.

A gauge at Centerville recorded a third of an inch of rain over the course of three hours, reflecting the rain that fell in the center of the Valley.

Fredericksburg resident Jeff Garvin reported .23 inches of rain from the storm.

The fields east of Genoa received .12 inches of rain, while gauges in and around the oldest town barely saw .01 inches.

The sudden storm prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood warning for Alpine and Douglas counties around 2:38 p.m. The warning was canceled around 5:20 p.m.

The annual Pony Express Re-ride managed to stay ahead of the worst of the storm, which saw rain in Hope Valley at around 1 p.m.

Both forks of the Carson River remained relatively unaffected by the rainfall, and according to the Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service didn’t approach crests hit earlier this week.

Western Nevada is forecast to dry out today before another system arrives on Saturday.

“As the low settles over southern California over the weekend, we'll see the return of widespread showers and thunderstorms Saturday through Monday,” National Weather Service Reno Meteorologist Dawn Johnston said. “While all the typical thunderstorm threats are on the table, we'll especially be watching the flash flood risk. If you have outdoor plans this weekend be sure to have a ‘plan B’ and a way to quickly get to safety.”

A flash flood warning has been issued for Douglas, Alpine and El Dorado counties until 5:30 p.m. due to thunderstorms.

At 2:38 p.m., the National Weather Service said that Doppler radar indicated between .75 and an inch of rain has fallen in the area.

Several lightning strikes accompanied the thunderstorm, setting a power pole on fire at 2:48 p.m. off Rojo in the Chambers Field neighborhood west of the Gardnerville Ranchos.

Firefighters reported a 15 by 15-foot fire with a couple of sheds threatened around the pole. They wrapped up work on the fire around 6 p.m.

Heavy rain started falling in Minden around 2:30 p.m.

Multiple lightning strikes from the storm were landing in the storm southwest of Minden and Gardnerville.
