The Knoxville Rotary presented a check to the Knoxville Hospital and Clinics for $8,500 for the purchase of AED’s (Automated External Defibrillators). Kevin Stittsworth, Director of Foundation and Public Relations Director at the Knoxville Hospital and Clinics, tells KNIA/KRLS News, “So this new fleet will be updated with the latest technology and having consistent equipment model across the facility is going to ensure we have the fast and most effective response in the event of an emergency. Basically AED’s save lives and we’re so grateful again to the Knoxville Rotary for this grant so we can purchase those.”

An interactive week of activities incorporating the history of Pella’s Dutch heritage returns to the Pella Historical Village this summer. Lisa Zylstra is bringing back the Dutch Day Camp for the 31st year on July 17th to 21st, a program that includes Dutch games, speaking and singing in the native language, crafts, and history lessons. The camp is open to incoming 5th and 6th graders and programming will be co-hosted by Jim Uitermarkt and Dr. Ronald Rietveld. Registration costs $80 for Pella Historical Society members and $100 for non-members, and includes a daily sack lunch. Last night shortly after 8:00 pm, the Knoxville Fire Department was dispatched to a reported residential fire in the 100 block of South Conrey. Crews arrived to find smoke throughout the main floor of the residence. They made entry to find a dryer on fire. Crews extinguished the fire and ventilated the structure.

The vast majority of power lines that can go underground are currently in that state in the City of Pella. At Tuesday’s Pella City Council meeting, a public hearing will be held to get some of the last overhead lines converted in the community. The council will review two bids for a project to install underground conduit, box pads, and pull boxes for the electrical distribution system from Idaho Drive at the water treatment plant to the clear wells downstream at Howell Station Campground. The city’s electric distribution crew would follow up with installation of the cable and transformers. The project is estimated to cost $700,000 and would be completed by June 30th, 2024. This week’s Pella City Council meeting begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Pella Public Safety Complex.

The Des Moines Skydivers Club in Knoxville will be putting on an Open House later this month. Christy Brokens, one of the members, tells KNIA/KRLS News, “We’re going to host an Open House and the purpose of this is just for us to get to know the community and for the community to get to know us, because skydiving is such a community focused sport and event. So we just really wanted to bring a lot of fun activities into the hangar to draw people in. Just so they can come and hang out with us and enjoy the day.”

The City of Indianola is continuing work on the Parks Master Plan, a living document that will detail the long-term plans of current and future parks in the city. Parks and Rec Director Doug Bylund tells KNIA News a survey is available to the public right now, which will help determine the needs and wants of local parks.

The 2024 Presidential Campaign is in full swing ahead of the Iowa Caucuses early next year, and another candidate stopped in Pella this week. Former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson was at Pella Cooperative Electric Friday. The Republican challenger discussed energy policy and focused criticism on President Joe Biden for his policies in energy, at the southern border, Afghanistan, and the federal budget.

The Indianola Community Youth Foundation is partnering with the Blank Park Zoo for local students to spend a day at the zoo later this month. ICYF Executive Director Taylor Nehring tells KNIA News the partnership is a good way to get kids outside in a fun environment over the summer.

The Indianola Public Library held the annual Summer Bash event Thursday evening despite the rain canceling the outdoor portion, welcoming hundreds of community members to celebrate the return of summer with multiple activities inside the library including board games and signing up for the summer reading program. Library Director Michele Patrick tells KNIA News she encourages all kids to participate in the summer reading program.

The first of two Indianola Chamber of Commerce Summer Nights Live concerts is a week away on the downtown Indianola square. The chamber changed the concerts to Summer Nights Live on the downtown Indianola square from Friday Night Live in Memorial Park, taking advantage of the finished construction on the Indianola downtown square. The Chamber will have Trainwreck on June 9th for the first show, with music from 7-9pm, and are family friendly. Find more information about the concert below.

Spirit of Pella is hosting an official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the non-profit organization’s first mural. The event will be held on Thursday, June 8 at 10 am in front of the new mural on the Brew Coffeehouse located at 626 Franklin Street as special guests Mayor Don DeWaard, Dutch Expert Milly Vande Kieft, and Muralist Hannah Heschke share a few remarks about the painting.

A ribbon cutting will take place today as the Indianola Chamber of Commerce welcome’s Crouse Tree Service to the chamber. Chamber President and CEO Amanda Zwanziger tells KNIA News Crouse Tree Service specializes in commercial and residential service tree care serving Indianola and the surrounding area. The ribbon cutting is today at the parking lot on the corner of S 1st St. and E 1st Ave at 3pm, with all chamber ambassadors and members of the public invited.

The Indianola Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center will open for the season tomorrow, after scheduled maintenance and filling the pool is completed. The 2023 season will run until August 20th, with season passes still available for purchase, and the aquatic center opens Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 1-7, Tuesday/Thursday from 1-6, and Saturday/Sunday from 1-5 for daily admission without a season pass, and those age 2 and under swim free with a paid adult admission. Two Central Students Selected for National Science Foundation Summer Research

Several KNIA/KRLS area high school soccer players are earning postseason honors. Sisters Mia and Abby Warner were selected to the Class 2A All-Tournament team by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union for their performances as part of the top four finish for the Pella girls soccer team. Three Norwalk players were named to the Class 3A All-Tournament Team in senior Jack Brown, junior Caden Endres and freshman Tyden Eng, after their 3A runner-up finish Saturday.

A 38-year-old Knoxville man pleaded guilty to two counts of Stalking. Jacob Lee Baxter entered a plea of guilty to two counts of Stalking June 1. The stalking cases took place in the Spring of 2022. Baxter was sentenced to five years for each count of stalking for a total of 10 years.

It will be a little bit different this weekend at the Knoxville Raceway this week. The USAC National Sprint Cars will make an appearance tonight and tomorrow night for the Avanti Windows and Doors Corn Belt Clash. Kyle Cummins currently leads the USAC National Sprint Car points by 22 over four-time points champion Brady Bacon who has won four times in a USAC event at Knoxville, sweeping the weekend back in 2019. The weekly 360 and 410 sprint cars will also be in action this week with the 360s tonight and the 410s tomorrow night. You can listen to both nights starting with Live Track Side at 5:00 and Race Nights Live at 7:00 on the DeYarman Automotive Radio Racing Network on KNIA. Live Track Side tonight will air on both 94.3 and 95.3 KNIA, while Race Nights Live will only air on 95.3 due to local sports coverage.

USAC Corn Belt Clash Is Tonight At Knoxville Raceway

Central College is offering Junior Golf Nights on the school’s Ryerson Practice Facility this summer. Junior high and high school players may participate in any or all of the six sessions. Cost is $15 per session and golf balls are provided. They’ll be conducted June 8, 15, 22, and 29 and July 6 and 13. Players should meet at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex parking lot, southwest of P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium.

A rough stretch continued for the Pella softball team at the Oskaloosa tournament Saturday, falling to #14 in 3A Chariton 4-0 and 11-6 to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. The Dutch offense could not solve Chargers’ starter Layne Braby, tallying just four hits in the contest. While the Dutch bats got going against the Rockets, they had to do so from behind after giving up five runs in the first inning. Payton Lyons was 3-for-3 in that game with a home run. Pella has dropped six games in a row and will try to find their footing Monday in a doubleheader against #1 in 4A Dallas Center-Grimes on the road.
