Hanson's heroics help Marines overcome Wrightstown

MARINETTE — The Marinette High School baseball team won a wild one with Wrightstown at Pedersen Ballpark on Tuesday.

The Marines trailed by as many 11 runs before storming back for a 15-14 walk-off victory.

On a day in which every Marine batter collected at least one hit, Weston Hanson shined, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and five runs batted in.

As if that was not enough, the Marinette senior also picked up the win on the mound with two innings of relief work in which he allowed a run on two hits while striking out three.

The Tigers looked like they were on their way to a rout when they plated six runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 13-2, but Marinette used a six-run fifth and a five-run sixth to tie the game before walking it off in the seventh.

The teams traded runs in the first inning with Hanson lifting a sacrifice fly to get the Marines on the board.

Wrightstown scored three in the third and three more in the fourth while Marinette got one back in the bottom of the third inning.

Things got crazy in the fifth inning with the two teams combining to score 13 runs.

Wrightstown’s six-run top of the inning was highlighted by a grand slam from Jack Severson.

The Marines got off the mat in the bottom of the inning, scoring seven runs on six hits. Justin Kruse ripped a two-run single, and Cooper Smith added an RBI double during the rally.

Hanson, who started the day at designated hitter, came on in relief in the sixth inning and allowed a single run.

Marinette came all the way back to tie the game with five runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Sam Sommerfeldt drove in a run with a base-hit and Hanson delivered a two-run double.

In the seventh, Hanson held the Tigers scoreless for the first time since the second inning, and the Marines plated an unearned run to win it in the bottom of the inning.

While Hanson’s big day paced the Marinette offense, the Marines collected 13 hits on the day including at least one from all nine hitters.

Cooper Smith went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Kruse went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored, and Sommerfeldt was 1-for-2 with three walks, two RBI and two runs scored.

Wrightstown collected ten hits on the day, but only one Tiger had a multi-hit day. Quade Thompson was 2-for-2 with two RBI. Severson, the Tiger’s leadoff hitter was 1-for-2 with a grand slam and three runs scored.

Marinette improved to 8-12 on the season and 6-11 in conference play. Wrightstown fell to 11-8 overall and 9-8 in NEC play.
