MARINETTE — The Marinette High School softball team closed the week with a pair of North Eastern Conference losses Thursday and Friday.

After defeating Wrightstown 11-5 on Tuesday, the Marines traveled to Wrightstown for a rematch on Thursday in which the Tigers prevailed 13-3.

Marinette then hosted NEC frontrunner Freedom High School on Friday and suffered a 13-2 setback.

On Thursday it appeared the Marines would pick up right where they left off with the Tigers.

Marinette plated three runs in the top of the first inning with an RBI knock from Destiny Walker and an RBI double off the bat of Kaya Bodam. However, Wrightstown’s Penelope Mead buckled down and shut the Marines out the rest of the way.

Meanwhile the Tigers took advantage of five Marinette errors to score nine unearned runs. Wrightstown scored two in the first, one in the fourth and two more in the fifth to lead 5-3 before exploding for eight runs in the sixth inning.

Wynn Erdman was tagged with the loss after allowing 13 runs, only four earned, on 12 hits in 5.2 innings. She walked one and struck out seven.

Mead allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits and two walks in six innings pitched. Bodam was the only Marine to record multiple hits with a 2-for-3 performance.

Similarly on Friday, things looked good at the outset. Freedom entered the contest sitting atop the NEC standings with a sparkling 9-3 record including a 9-1 mark in conference play. Bri Adamski toed the rubber and fired a one-two-three first inning.

After two quick outs in the bottom of the first, the Marines had something brewing when they loaded the bases with consecutive singles from Erdman, Bodam and Hermanson. However, Peyton VandeLoo got out of the jam unscathed with a fly ball to right.

“We put pressure on them in the first,” Marinette coach Scott MacIntyre said. “If we could have gotten a couple there, the game could have changed.”

In the second inning, the Irish touched Adamski for four runs on five hits. They picked up two more in both the third and fourth innings to lead 8-0.

VandeLoo worked three scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out four before giving way to Kailey Stordeur in relief.

Marinette finally hit paydirt in the fifth inning. Barrett Cole led off with a single to left and Destiny Walker followed with a walk. Two batters later, Bodam smashed a two-run single to center.

Freedom took advantage of a Marinette error in the sixth and plated five runs to end the game at 13-2. Adamski pitched well in the loss against a quality opponent, allowing seven earned runs in six innings of work. She walked only two and struck out one.

“Bri pitched what we wanted,” MacIntyre said. “She threw strikes, but they’re a top-five team in the state for a reason. They are a very good hitting team, and we knew that.”

Bodam was again the only Marine to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

“We are getting in that right mindset where we need to be,” MacIntyre said. “We’ve just got to keep getting better.”

    Due Up

The Marines (2-7, 2-7 NEC) have a five-game week on the horizon.

Marinette will play at Denmark (10-5, 9-3 NEC) today (Monday), at Oconto Falls (7-5, 7-4 NEC) on Tuesday, at home against Fox Valley Lutheran (10-4, 6-4 NEC) on Thursday and then at Waupaca (5-8, 2-7 NEC) for two games on Friday.
