MARINETTE — Few teams possess a double-headed scoring threat as potent as the one that the Marinette girls soccer team has in Chloe Seymour and Sierra Schreiner, and the talent of the Marines’ dynamic duo was on full display against Denmark.

Seymour celebrated her birthday with a four-goal performance while Schreiner collected a hat trick as the Marines snapped a two-game losing skid with an 8-0 shutout over the Vikings on Monday.

After starting the season 2-0-1, the Marines suffered consecutive losses against Freedom and Seymour, largely due to an inability to score in the second half, with Marinette being held scoreless after halftime in both defeats.

Marinette (1-1-1 NEC, 3-2-1 overall) had no such second-half slump on Monday, with Schreiner pumping in her second goal of the game just 32 seconds into the action, putting the Marines on top 4-0.

Seymour rattled off back-to-back goals within a span of three minutes before Schreiner wrapped up her hat trick with goal No. 3, which made it a 7-0 contest in favor of the Marines with 10:38 left to play.

Jada Jones finished Denmark off by sneaking a penalty kick past Vikings’ goalie Lilyana Dallman at the 3:49 mark to secure the eight-goal mercy rule win for Marinette.

Victory in tow, the only thing left for the Marines to do was serenade Seymour with a rendition of “Happy Birthday” before indulging in homemade brownies as the Vikings retreated to the confines of their bus.

“The girls definitely needed this win. After those two hard losses, we talked a lot about what we needed to improve on,” Marinette coach Allyson Price said. “We started the season playing a few weaker teams, but then we played teams that are more at our level and that was a good learning experience for us.”

Denmark, which has only scored one goal all season long and none in its past two contests, was on its heels from the opening moments of the first half after Schreiner powered in a goal for a 1-0 Marinette lead.

Kylie Kunick broke loose for the Marines’ second goal of the afternoon before Seymour found the net to give Marinette a 3-0 cushion at halftime.

“Chloe has been battling a hamstring injury, so that’s been tough on her, but she was excited to get a win on her birthday,” Price said.

Schriener and Josie Smerchek each had two assists for the Marines.
