MARINETTE — The Marinette High School softball team remains winless on the young season despite a hot start at Kimberly Clark Field on Monday.

The Marines put 13 runs on the board in the first inning but could not outslug North Eastern Conference foe Little Chute on the way to a 21-16 final score.

The Mustangs plated four runs on three hits and a walk in the top of the first, but the Marines were seemingly unstoppable in the bottom of the frame.

All nine Marines reached base safely and came around to score before the first out was finally recorded.

Marinette sent 13 hitters to the plate before that first out, and when the dust settled, they had made two full trips through the lineup and scored 13 runs on nine hits, five walks and two errors.

Barrett Cole, Destiny Walker, Kaya Bodam and Lauren Pelon all scored multiple runs in the inning.

Bri Adamski and Georgieanna Grandaw each had a pair of hits while Grandaw knocked in four runs and Adamski and Pelon each drove in a pair.

A shell shocked Little Chute squad went scoreless in the second inning but began to chip away in the third by taking advantage of two Marinette errors and scoring four runs to close the margin to 13-8.

The Mustangs came all the way back to tie the game when they batted around in the fourth inning, scoring five runs on three hits, two walks and a hit batter.

The Marines regained the lead when Cole drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fourth. She stole second and eventually scored on a misplayed grounder struck by Regan Hermanson.

The game began to slip away in the fifth inning. A leadoff error opened the door to a three-run frame, and the Mustangs followed that up with five more in the sixth inning to open a 21-14 advantage.

The Marines scraped a run in the sixth when Walker singled and scored and another in the seventh when Peyton VanPool delivered her fourth hit of the day and scored on a single from Cole.

Little Chute benefitted from eight Marinette errors, scoring 11 unearned runs in the game. Meanwhile the Mustangs committed just three errors and allowed four unearned tallies.

VanPool, a freshman third baseman, paced the offense, going 4-for-4 with a walk and a pair of runs scored. Grandaw was 2-for-5 with four RBI, and Adamski was 3-for-5 with two RBI.

Adamski took the loss after allowing 21 runs, 10 earned, on 16 hits and six walks.

Abigail VanHandel picked up the win after allowing 16 runs, 12 earned, on 15 hits and eight walks.

Sixteen runs were the most scored by the Marines in any game, win or lose, since a 17-12 win over Oconto Falls on April 25, 2022. The 37 total runs marked the highest scoring game the Marines have played since a 24-22 win over Shawano on April 25, 2014.

Due Up

The Marines (0-4, 0-4 NEC) will travel to Luxemburg-Casco (5-1, 3-1 NEC) on Thursday. That North Eastern Conference contest is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. first pitch.
