NOVATO, Calif. (KCBS RADIO) – Crews are working to repair the damage left by a mudslide that mangled part of a Novato road along Highway 101.

A 100 foot stretch of Redwood Boulevard is buckling and caving in due to the large slide. County officials said the hillside above, known as Gnoss Field, came loose Tuesday night, falling 20 feet down to the road.

"The road, unfortunately, at this point isn't passable and will be closed for the foreseeable future, not only until it's repaired, but just to give PG&E, North Bay Water and other crews the space that they need to make sure that that hillside is secured," Marin County spokesperson Laine Hendricks told KCBS Radio.

Redwood Boulevard is used to access Olompali State Historic Park, forcing officials to close the park to the public.

The good news is there are no homes in this area and Highway 101 isn't impacted, though the slide uncovered a gas line and put pressure on an aqueduct that runs from Sonoma County to Marin County.

Crews are taking advantage of the sunny weather to firm up the hillside. "The weather, obviously, is what caused the slide, so this gives the site time to not only be stabilized, but dry out a bit as well, so it hopefully helps further slides from happening," Hendricks said.

The ultimate fix may require temporarily turning off water or gas. Crews are still making that determination.
