MSU marketing students volunteer at Mitten Misfits Farm Sanctuary

Amid straw-covered paths, animal enclosures and wandering ducks, Michigan State University Marketing Association volunteers traded a morning of their usual campus routines for a day of hands-on farm work in Grand Ledge, Michigan. On Sunday, Oct. 11, members continued a 3-year tradition of volunteering at Mitten Misfits, a nonprofit farm sanctuary that primarily cares for animals with special needs. The organization welcomes student volunteers, offering them an opportunity to learn about farm sanctuaries and support its mission. Casey Ehlert, a volunteer and Mitten Misfits event coordinator, said she enjoys seeing students get involved. "I love you guys coming out. It's amazing to provide an experience for those who can't volunteer daily or on a weekly basis, having you be exposed to a different type of lifestyle and the other kinds of nonprofits that are out there, and seeing the need for a farm sanctuary," Ehlert said. MSUMA began volunteering at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Students were divided into five groups to complete various tasks around the farm, including unloading donated food, breaking down boxes and feeding animals. Cooking up success: How one Michigan chef is fueling MSU athletes

For Michigan chef Keith Belk, a single meal prep request turned into an opportunity he never expected to happen so quickly. What started with cooking for a single basketball player has grown into a business serving dozens of college athletes across multiple states with meals that are both nutritious and full of flavor. Belk launched his culinary brand, Whip It Up Keith, in 2020 and rebranded in summer 2026 to focus on preparing meals for Michigan State athletes. He's built a growing clientele of football and basketball players, including MSU running back Cam Edwards and Michigan point guard Elliot Cadeau. Before working with athletes, Belk focused on small events, private dinners, and personal services for clients in Metro Detroit. Although he had cooked for athlete friends before, he unexpectedly transitioned to meal prepping for college and professional athletes. Duke Blue Devils guard and West Bloomfield, Michigan, native John Blackwell was one of the first athletes to reach out to Belk while spending the summer back home in Michigan. Brighton hibachi restaurant had four priority violations in September

Each month, the Livingston County Health Department inspects restaurants, schools and other facilities for unsafe food practices. Adhering to proper safety practices is critical to preventing foodborne illness and promoting public health. The Daily publishes reports on "priority" violations — those that could "directly lead to contamination of food or increase the risk of transmitting a foodborne illness,” as well as corrective measures taken. At least thirteen dining establishments met that criteria in September. Follow-up inspections of those violations are also provided if they occurred last month. All reports are available at swordsolutions.com/inspections . Four priority violations were found at: Kazoku Hibachi Express : 9912 E. Grand River Ave. Suite 500 in Brighton Time was being used as a public health control for sushi rice instead of temperature. The restaurant also pre-makes some of their sushi rolls and holds them at room temperature; these must be labeled with discard dates. To correct, proper procedures were discussed. Low-splash bleach was being used to sanitize food-contact surfaces. The restaurant will use chlorine for food-contact surfaces instead.
