Mansfield police return to apartment complex after overnight standoff

MANSFIELD, Mass. (WLNE) — Police in Mansfield gave the all clear after an apparent standoff overnight — and returned to the scene early Monday morning.

Police responded to an apartment complex on Erick Road just before 8:30 p.m. Sunday for a well-being check.

Acting Police Chief Gary Sullivan said when they arrived, they tried to contact the person but after several tries, they were unsuccessful.

Two hours later, Sullivan said that out an abundance of caution, neighboring housing units were evacuated and a “shelter in place” emergency alert went out.

Police said after another failed attempt to contact the person, a motorized robot and drone were deployed to search the first floor of the apartment complex.

During that time, Sullivan said the person came out and surrendered to police without incident.

The person, whose name wasn’t immediately released, was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

No injuries were reported.

Sullivan said the person isn’t facing any criminal charges at this time. No further information was made available.
