Hunting at 3 a.m.? Story is not credible

To the Editor:

We all know nothing significant will happen to the three people accused of killing Faye at the Manlius swan pond. They claim they were “hunting,” and we know “hunters” go out in the middle of night to seek out prey. They jump iron fences. And, most important, they must make sure the animal is fast asleep (makes for a better kill).

For me, this is pure B.S. They thought is was a “big duck”! They didn’t know how important Faye was to the village They live in Syracuse, so how did they even know about the pond?

I also must put some of the blame for this disaster on the village of Manlius.

Back in the 1980s, a guy got drunk and bored one night, so he jumped the fence with a couple of BB guns and slaughtered several ducks and geese while they slept. A friend and I put together a petition with over 200 names on it that I submitted to the former mayor. We had asked for severe punishment. [Editor’s note: The defendant got six months in jail and was fined $2,500.] The village has had sufficient time to install security to help protect the animals on the pond.

There has to be some kind of accountability for these three. I suggest the following: For the months of June, July and August, four days a week, they should be required to do community service. They like to hang out in Shop City so they should be required to clean windows of all they stores there , pick up trash so it would become a cleaner place to visit. I’m sure there are other areas that would welcome their help.

Fence should have been their first clue

To the Editor:

They thought the swans were ducks? And what part of the fence surrounding them did they think was an invitation?

Commit acts of kindness for Faye

To the Editor:

I want to thank you for publishing Soozan Baxter’s commentary, “Manlius swan pond connects us to a vanishing way of life (May 31, 2023). It was a tribute to Faye, and also to her hometown.

I hope the Summer of 2023 random acts of kindness takes off. I’ll be at the Sno-Top. This is for you, Faye!
