LAKEVIEW, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A BMW driver struck a Long Island police officer who was attempting to make an arrest for fleeing a traffic stop, resulting in bullets being fired Sunday afternoon, police said.

Officers were approaching a black BMW M3 wanted for fleeing the Malverne traffic stop earlier Sunday when the driver purposely struck the Malverne police car and the officer at 2:25 p.m. on the corner of Mahopac Road and Scaneateles Avenue in Lakeview, Nassau County police said in a release.

The driver then struck a second police vehicle, nearly hitting another officer, before shots were fired, according to police.

The BMW was able to flee the scene. It wasn't immediately clear how many shots were fired or who fired the shots, but police said no one was struck.

According to police, both cops were taken to area hospitals for treatment of their injuries and have since been released.

The BMW was later recovered in Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

The Nassau County Homicide Squad is investigating the incident.
